October 18, 2018- Kohn, Swift & Graf is currently investigating multiple Magazine companies for allegedly “selling” their subscribers’ personal information without gaining their consent to do so.
Magazine Subscribers’ private information up for sale
It is being alleged that different magazine companies make a practice of selling and renting subscriber personal information to third parties for a profit. Supposedly, third parties can rent subscriber information based on a range of identifying factors such as age, race, income, and more. In addition, these third parties can receive and access specific, identifying data including the names and addresses of subscribers who fall within certain demographic categories.
One subscriber claimed that his magazine company sold his information to data aggregators and data cooperatives, and as a result, he began receiving junk mail from charities and organizations. The subscriber also alleges that he was promised a magazine subscription with statutory privacy protections but received one without statutory privacy protections. Had the subscriber known that the company would sell his personal information, then he would not have purchased a magazine subscription with the company.
If you believe that your personal information was sold or is currently being sold by the company which you purchased a magazine subscription with, please contact us. All consultations are free of charge. You may be eligible to be included in a Class Action Lawsuit.
