March 8, 2019- Energy “slamming” occurs when energy providers switch a customer’s electric or gas supplier without his or her knowledge or consent. Energy providers accomplish this by tricking the customer into sharing personal information, which they ultimately keep or give to another energy retailer. Consumers typically find out they’ve been slammed after receiving a higher bill from a new energy company. Increased Penalties for Energy Slamming in New Jersey
The practice is so problematic that the New Jersey State Legislature recently took action, approving a measure that would fine offenders up to $50,000.
