A seafood wholesaler has brought a lawsuit against several Norwegian aquaculture farms on behalf of direct purchasers of Norwegian salmon. On February 19th, 2019 the European Commission announced an investigation into, and subsequent raids against, salmon farms that are suspected of engaging in anti-competitive behavior. The farms, which include Mowi, Marine Harvest USA, Ducktrap River of Maine, Grieg Seafood, Bremnes Seashore, Ocean Quality USA, SalMar, Leroy Seafood Group, and Scottish Sea Farms, allegedly coordinated on and manipulated the market price for their salmon. By coordinating on prices and purchasing salmon from each other at inflated prices on the spot market, the farms were able to quote artificially inflated prices to their customers. Any direct purchasers of Norwegian salmon during the period from July 2015 through the present, may have paid inflated prices and suffered monetary damages.
