July 12, 2019- Kohn, Swift & Graf, P.C. is currently investigating Ford Motor Company for allegedly selling vehicles with defective transmissions.
FORD CONTINUED TO SELL ITS DPS6 TRANSMISSION DESPITE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS
Plaintiffs include owners of 2012-2016 Ford Focus and 2011-2016 Ford Fiesta cars. Consumers have alleged that Ford’s PowerShift, or DPS6, transmission, which was installed in Ford Focus and Fiesta models, slips, bucks, kicks, and jerks, resulting in sudden or delayed acceleration of the vehicle. Some Focus and Fiesta drivers reported neck injuries, bruised ribs, and thousands of dollars in hospital bills to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There have been over 4,300 documented complaints to NHTSA regarding the transmission. Ford also paid a fine of $7.6 million USD to the Australian government for mistreatment of consumers complaining of transmission issues, in a case involving 10,500 customer complaints over Ford vehicles with the DPS6 transmission.
In addition, it’s been alleged in the lawsuits and in the press that Ford knew the transmissions in their Focus and Fiesta models were unreliable as early as 2011, before they went on sale, and still sold them. Internal Ford documents made public in 2019 as part of state and federal lawsuits revealed early concern about the transmission technology, problems in development, and instructions to dealers on how to handle complaints from consumers after the cars were on the market.
