As many as 1.2 million members of AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies (“AmeriHealth”) have had their data stolen in a recent data breach. AmeriHealth, a health plan operator in many states, failed to adequately protect the sensitive data of its healthcare providers resulting in a hack. On or about November 15, 2019 a former employee stole the personal information of approximately 1.2 million AmeriHealth providers. The personally identifying information (“PII”), that was stolen included social security numbers, email addresses, and member ID numbers. This hack was possible because AmeriHealth failed to follow basic data security practices such as encryption which left data exposed and capable of being hacked.
