FDA Investigates Midwestern Pet Food for High Levels of Aflatoxins in Toxic “Sportmix” Products

The FDA is investigating Midwestern Pet Food after several dogs became ill or died after ingesting the company’s Sportmix pet foods. Midwestern Pet Food recalled varieties of Sportmix pet foods, which contain corn and have an expiration date on/before July 9, 2022. The recall also includes all products containing “05” in the date/lot code.

Midwestern Pet Food previously recalled certain lots of its Sportmix pet food in December of 2020, after the Missouri Department of Agriculture found high levels of aflatoxins in the food. Aflatoxins are produced by mold, and are known by the FDA to be toxic to pets.
