Approval for Recent Settlement in USC Sex Abuse Case
In late October of 2018, the University of Southern California reached a 215 million dollar settlement with patients who had been sexually abused by former university gynecologist, George Tyndall.
On June 13, 2019, Judge Steven V. Wilson of the U. S. District Court for the Central District of California issued an order granting Plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary approval of the settlement.
USC SETTLEMENT DETAILS
The terms of the USC settlement require them to implement comprehensive changes to protect students from sexual violence, including: policy changes at the Student Health Center, the appointment of an advocate to investigate reports of sexual misconduct, and an overhaul of university-wide sexual violence policies.
Additionally, survivors will be eligible to recover money damages in the amount of 2,500 dollars, as well as additional pay based on their experiences.
CLASS DEFINITION
The class eligible to recover from the suit is defined as “All women who were seen for treatment by Dr. George M. Tyndall at the University of Southern California student health center during the period from August 14, 1989 to June 21, 2016 (a) for Women’s Health Issues, or (b) whose treatment included an examination by him of her breast or genital areas, or (c) whose treatment included the taking of photographs or videotapes of her unclothed or partially clothed body.”
A conference to reach final approval of settlement is scheduled for early 2020.
