Kohn, Swift & Graf Investigates Tampon Products Contaminated by Heavy Metals

Kohn Swift & Graf, a recognized leader in product liability claims, is currently investigating the potential for a class action lawsuit against the manufacturers and distributors of contaminated tampons.

Heavy Metals in Tampons

A recent study has discovered lead, arsenic, and other heavy metals in over a dozen popular brands of tampons.

An NPR article on this study explains that, “The negative health effects of heavy metals are well-documented and wide-ranging, including damaging the cardiovascular, nervous and endocrine systems; damaging the liver, kidneys and brain; increasing the risk of dementia and cancer and harming maternal health and fetal development.”

The lead concentration in many of the tampons exceeded the allowable lead levels in drinking water by 10 times. Lead in tampons could leach into the bloodstream of consumers and potentially cause health issues. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) there is “no safe level” of lead exposure, so any amount of leaching could be incredibly dangerous. Other toxic metals found in tampons include: Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, Cobalt, Mercury, Selenium, Strontium, and Vanadium.

Which Tampons Contain Heavy Metals?

Although researchers did not disclose the brand of tampons they tested, they reported testing 14 “major” and most “popular” brands sold in the United States. All tested positive for lead. Organic tampons were reportedly more likely to contain high levels of arsenic, while nonorganic tampons were more likely to contain high levels of lead. While the study did not identify the brands that tested positive for heavy metals, the most popular brands sold in the United States are: Tampax, Playtex, Kotex, o.b., Cora, Rael, Seventh Generation, Lola, Honey Pot, and L. Organics.

Many of these brands claim that their tampons are safe to use and free of chemicals. Consumers rely on these representations when purchasing tampons.

Who is Eligible to File a Tampon Contamination Claim?

You might be eligible to file a tampon contamination claim if you purchased any of the most popular brands of tampons.

If you would not have purchased or would have paid less for tampon products if they contained heavy metals, or if you believe you may have suffered negative health consequences from lead or heavy metal poisoning that may have originated from using a contaminated tampon, please reach out to our firm right away.
