Cancer Causing Agent Found in Zantac Medication
It has recently been reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that a popular heartburn medication, Zantac and some generic ranitdine, contain a probable human cancer-causing agent. Ranitdine, including certain dosages of Zantac, has been sold over-the-counter for years. It is also available by prescription.
An investigation launched by the U.S. and European Union found that a likely carcinogen called N-Nitrosodimethylamine (“NDMA”) was present in Zantac and in some generic ranitidine. Zantac has been recalled in Europe and Canada.
It has also been alleged in a Citizens Petition filed with the FDA and in a private lawsuit that ranitdine forms NDMA and can react with itself. The Citizens Petition also claims that ranitdine likely generates NDMA in the human body. The private lawsuit alleges that the producers of ranitidine drugs knew or should have known about ranitdine and NDMA for years.
The FDA suggests that if you are taking a prescription ranitidine drug that you consult your health care provider about treatment options.
The FDA also suggests that people taking over-the-counter ranitidine consider using other over-the-counter medicines approved for their condition, as there are a variety of such drugs available. The FDA is continuing its investigation.
Sales of Zantac or other ranitdine that contained NDMA may have been in violation of State consumer protection and other laws. People who purchased Zantac may be entitled to refunds or damages.
