Google+ 2nd Privacy Breach this Year

December 17, 2018- Kohn, Swift & Graf is currently investigating Google+ Second data breach, affecting over 52.5 million users worldwide.

Google’s first data breach occurred after a software bug in the Google+ social network exposed user information, affecting around 500,000 people.┬áIn March, Google discovered that a bug in the API for Google+ had been allowing third-party app developers to access the data not just of users who had granted permission, but of their friends. Up to 438 different third-party applications may have had access to private information due to the bug. Learn more about the first breach here.

Google’s 2nd data breach has subjected over 100 times more users to an information leak when compared to its last data leak. The data involved in the breach includes personal profile information, but does not involve financial data or passwords.

After the first breach, it was alleged that Google did not disclose the fact that it had left the data of 500,000 Google+ users exposed due to a glitch. Google said they cannot confirm which users were impacted by the bug, but they planned to shut down consumer access to Google+ and improve privacy protections for third-party applications. Now, Google announced that it will shutter Google+ earlier than originally anticipated with a new final date of April 2019.
