October 30, 2018- The purpose of a deregulated energy market is to enable consumers to voluntarily chose their alternative retail electric supplier, and in turn, find the lowest rate possible. The “advantage” of being able to shop around for the best electric and/or gas plan and choose your energy provider is intended to help millions of consumers save on their energy bills. Or at least, this was the case until “slamming” occurred.
Another con is taking place right before our eyes, and this time it’s called “slamming.” Slamming involves the illegal practice of switching your energy supplier without your consent.
Deregulated Energy Markets Ripe for Fraud
Here’s how it works- A slamming energy company representative can come to your door, posing as a door-to-door salesperson. This representative will usually claim to be a billing representative from your local utility company, and one of two things will happen:
- The representative may say something along the lines of “you need to settle an overdue bill to avoid an immediate shutoff.” They will then get your credit card information and be off.
- He or she may trick you into showing them a copy of your monthly bill and by doing that, they can get your local utility account number, which they will then use to switch you from your current energy company to their energy company without you even knowing about it.
Consistently monitoring your month to month billing statements is the only way to know whether or not you have been or currently are a victim of energy supplier slamming.
If you or someone you know has been or currently is a victim of this slamming, please contact us. These slamming energy companies are known to target inner city communities, the elderly and those who speak English as a second language. All consultations are free of charge. You may be eligible to be included in a Class Action Lawsuit.
